In order for our hearts to live free, we must learn the spiritual grace of detachment- not abandoning our desire, but surrendering our will. We must surrender our desire(s) to God. Is there anything you ardently desire that you are doing nothing to secure? The fact is, at this point in our journey, we have only three options: (1) to be alive that thirsty, (2) to be dead, or (3) to be addicted. There are no other choice (p. 182 Journey of Desire). There is a divine art in learning to surrender with desire… the desire is present, felt, welcomed even. But the will to secure the desire is surrendered to God in an act of abandoned trust.
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
